The Auxiliary Fuel Tank
Fill/Isolation Valve, Exh #1-2468,
retrieved from box Exh #1-1274, was
discussed with John GARSTANG.
He was not able to provide a correct
orientation for the unit, or the
bulkhead wall unit. However,
he advised that the valve is now
closed, which is obvious. But
it should instead be open. The
unit serves to move fuel from the
aft tank forward for balance and
ballast, especially when readying for
a landing, as they do not want to
land tail heavy or the plane will
drag its tail on the runway.
The fact that it is now closed
indicates a problem with the
electrical system running the unit.
However, there are several fuses
involved, and two redundant wiring
systems to run it. They do not
really know if it is a lead event,
or a follow-on event of the fire.
However, John wants the valve unit
turned as an OM, and Randy VITT
wants the whole unit in Ottawa for
their ‘show and tell’.
