(Clarification:) Robertson was a contracted
civilian surveyor hired to transit survey exact measurements of
the aircraft interior and various pieces of equipment.
Boeing at the time had all of their aircraft and equipment
designs as hand drawn diagrams with nothing computerized.
The DC-10 along with its stretched version that became the MD-11
had been created as pencil drawings on a drafting table, not on
a computer as is done today. Boeing worked to copy
the drawings over to CAD, but it was a slow process. John
Garstang and the TSB wanted faster results, so it was easier to
hire someone to measure the exact distances involved and thus
create an outline for the burnt pieces.
